Lost Boys, Spelling Mistakes, and Aggressive Power Rock: An Interview with Matt and Ryan of Marina City

One of the coolest thing about My Music, My Concerts, My Life is getting turned on to new bands. Even cooler is that we get to talk to these bands. More often then not the bands we end up digging hit it big and we get to say we got in on the ground floor. This is your chance to get in on the ground floor with Marina City.  You're welcome.

Fran - Ok, first thing first, Lou Malnati’s or Giordano’s?
Matt Gaudiano (Keyboards/Vocals) - Oh shoot. I have to say Lou Malnati’s. I can’t speak for everyone in the band but I love me my Lou’s.

One of the more unique things I hear in Marina City is the fact that you have three lead singers.  Three singers with very different styles at that.  I tried to think back to other bands that have done this and I had to go back to Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles.  How did this come about?
Ryan Argast (Lead Vocals) - It was really natural. If a part needs more of a sexy smooth tone we go with Matt and if a song needs more of a punk aggressiveness to it we will go with Brian. I'll do everything in the middle. If we all can carry a tune might as well use it!

I hate comparing bands with other bands because I feel that it doesn’t give due justice.  It feels like you have taken the best parts from Fall Out Boy, Coldplay, and The Used and created something totally unique.  Is this based on band chemistry or overall influences?
Ryan - Definitely love all those bands so it's really cool to hear that. Honestly, our music just comes from an honest place. If you asked all of us who our favorite bands were you wouldn't get any doubles. Instead you would hear Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, A Day To Remember, Blink 182, Justin Timberlake, Fall Out Boy, Bruno Mars, Mayday Parade, Panic! At The Disco, Dream Theater, and something else strange. We write music that all of us like. All of us have a say in the writing process so we just write until we all like it. So far so good.

Can you tell us about your latest EP?  Do you feel musically the band has grown since you formed in 2012?
Ryan - Oh absolutely! We are not even the same band as 2014! We've grown so much. 2012 Marina City would have never been able to pull off a live touring acoustic/reimagine EP like Lost Doesn't Mean Alone. We didn't know our instruments or each other well enough to do this.

As someone who has never seen your live show what could I expect from the sextet Marina City in concert?
Ryan - Really high energy, crowd participation through out the show, and an emotional performance.

Your fan base has been dubbed “The Lost Boys” taken from one of your song titles.  How important have they been to Marina City’s growth over the years.
Ryan - EXTREMELY Important. We don't have a booking agent, or manager, or label, so they are the ones who spread our music, help us pay for things, and get us shows! There is no Marina City with out the Lost Boys...and girls :)

What are you guys currently listening to in the tour van?  What would your current top five albums be?
Ryan - We got an Equal Vision Label sampler from our boys in Coldfront so we have been jamming that a lot. However a lot of Too Close To Touch, Sleep On It, Kendrick Lamar, Emarosa, Chvrches, Young The Giant, and bad 90s songs that we all love. Everyone is always stealing the aux chord so its rare that we are all listening to the same album together.

With six band members, what is the writing process like?  Is it a and collaboration, do you work in pairs, or is one member responsible?
Ryan - The band writes the music as a collaboration. We literally sit in Matt's basement together and start from ground up on a song. When the music is done I'll write all the lyrics and melodies for it.

How would you describe your music?
Ryan - Aggressive Pop Rock! Throw Pop, Rock, Metal, Jazz, Soul, and Funk in a pot, stir it up, and BAM!

Which member of the band spends the most time on his hair?  Who has the worst tattoo?
Matt - Alright, I would safely say that all of us spend about 10 times as long as normal guys on their hair, but Ryan definitely takes the cake on the longest time to get their hair done. As for the worst tattoo, only Brian, Todor, and myself have tattoo, and only one of us has a spelling error on ours… who that is I’ll leave up to you guys to figure out hahaha!
Ryan - Yeah, definitely me with the hair, this doesn't come natural!

Thank you guys!  Looking forward to seeing you live when you make your way to Philly!

See you when the needle drops!
