A record store isn't just a place where you buy music. It has to identify with you. It is like picking the right clothing store. Each one has its own personality and that personality has to be compatible with you. When you find that perfect match it is like an oasis. It is that happy place that you never thought really existed. The wonderful thing about that match is that others just like you have made that same pilgrimage. You meet others like yourself and you congregate. You share. You discover. You interact. Sure, music discovery exists on the internet. And that is a huge part of my life. But it does not replace the record store.
I have 1,800 CD's. I got my first CD player for Christmas 1987. Back then when you bought a CD it wasn't always music that you knew. It may be based on the recommendation of a friend, you might just like the album artwork, or it could be from a review in a magazine like Star Hits. Hopefully you hit a home run and it was a keeper. Sometime it was a strikeout in which you would try to trade it to a friend. This one was a single.
I can't really take credit for this idea. This was a question initially asked by a Facebook friend. Blair Hook (of the internet). It did get me to really think about this. It set the wheels in motion Mainly because the best that I could come up with was Attila / Billy Joel. I needed retribution. What would be my Top 10? This has taken a lot of thought but I was finally able to come up my Top 3. All much better than my initial answer.
