I had never been on a NY subway...let alone by myself. Sometimes when I think of NYC I still think of it as the 1970's NYC. Sometimes a scary place. I was pleasantly surprised. My ride was actually enjoyable. It was a short 6 minute commute to my next destination. Santos Party House in Downtown Manhattan, near China Town.
It is a small venue owned by Andrew W.K. The opportunity to see metalcore legends like Killswitch Engage in a venue like this is once in a lifetime. They currently play venues that hold thousands. Not only that but they were recording it to boot!
If it wasn't for the velvet ropes outside I would have walked right by the venue. They were getting ready for the rush. I flashed the VIP badge and walked right in. The opening act, Eye Ra Haze. By the end of the set the place was packed and considered a sellout.
I grabbed a beer and started to people watch. The camera man videotaping told me that the man in front of me with the large arms and neck tat was the former head of security at CBGBs. It was an interesting crowd. 5'5" with 8' of testosterone.
Finally they took the stage and the crowd was so engaged it was like being sucked into a vacuum and spit back out. I tried to take photos but the venue was too dark.
It was obvious the band was having a good time. The between song banter was hysterical. Musically they were like a volcano erupting.
Holy Shit. Just watching that video has gotten my adrenaline pumping. It was such an intense show. It was a real treat. The set was both songs of early in their career and current material. One of the best things about the show was that it was a cancer benefit. Turning Point was a highlight for me.
For as much as I was enjoying this show I knew I had to be on my way to the next stop. Ice-T was playing a venue that only held 150 people. I did not want to miss this one!
To Be Continued...
